The Swing Cats are a live Swing band with a difference!

Their set list is made up of the more uptempo hits from the swing dance era of the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Lead by charismatic front man Luke Thomas on lead vocals, the mildly eccentric Charco Bernard on piano, ‘Steady’ Simon McVeigh on the double bass, Dennis Skully on Saxophone , Eoghan Cooke on Trumpet and Dave Ringo Keegan on the big bass drum .

While still immersed in the music of Luis Prima , The Ratpack , Luis Jordan and other such legends from the golden age of American big band swing music.

The Swing Cats have drawn on these icons as their main influences but have put quite their own unique contemporary twist on this music which has given them a unique brand of high energy swing dance music that gets all ages on the dance floor from the beginning until the end of any occasion .

Kíla set to rock the Civic Theatre

Kíla are bringing their hip-shaking, smile-making, funky, groovy brand of trad to The Civic Theatre Tallaght on Fri 30th April.

Every year Kíla produce something magical, something memorable, something special and 2015 was no different as they brought another creative piece of work to the table.

Suas Síos (Up Down) was released nationwide in Ireland in January of last year. It is a work of beauty, a work of maturity, a work that encapsulates their exuberance, their quietness and their sheer talent.

Recorded, mixed and mastered by the ubiquitous Mr. Karl Odlum (Ham Sandwich, Lisa O’Neill, Mic Christopher), the album is bristling with energy, passion and incisive musical intelligence.

The critically acclaimed album has been described as some of the band’s best work, while it has also added to the reputation of the energetic and often electrifying group.

The last couple of years have seen Kíla return to their globetrotting ways (Croatia, Malaysia, France, Spain, Switzerland) and it was during these gigs abroad that these songs and tunes were given an opportunity to breath and gain nuances that might not have emerged ensconced in the studio environment.

Kila have been celebrating the continued success of their recent album Suas Síos, the remarkable film Song of the Sea, which they co-wrote the score for and the most recent news that the music they wrote for the documentary about the Shannon Ireland’s Secret River was nominated for an Emmy award.

SPACE to play Belfast and Dublin gigs in 2016

logo

lekmk Prmotions are proud to announce that Liverpool and Britpop legends SPACE will be playing two gigs in Ireland in May 2016.

The band that brought you iconic songs including Female of the Species and Ballad of Tom Jones will play The Belfast Empire on May 6 and will then appear in The Grand Social in Dublin the following evening on May 7.

Accompanying Tommy Scott, Franny Griffiths and the rest of the band will be Dublin band Late Ctiy Edition, and both gigs are expected to be a trip down memory lane, while also showing SPACE’s Britpop, neo-psychedelic magic.

Having released their latest album ‘Attack Of The Mutant 50ft Kebab’ in March 2014 – their first new album for nine years – SPACE arrive in Ireland in 2016 with a full new set list, while there will also be all the iconic tunes we all remember.

The band have been touring the UK through 2015 performing at festivals through the summer before embarking on the full UK tour in October and November to promote the first ever Boxset of Albums.

Tommy Scott’s influence for the new songs stemmed from his infamous fascination with science and horror films, and he likens the album to a ‘Fifties B-Movie’ for the ears.

Space have sold over 2 million albums worldwide with titles including Spiders, Tin Planet, Suburban Rock and Roll and Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab.

They also released 10 top 40 singles and a host of other single releases to-date with titles including Neighborhood, Female of the Species, Me and You vs The World, Avenging Angels, Dark Clouds and Begin Again.

The band continue to write gritty edgy pop songs that captivate the imagination of the listener and you are invited to get on board for what is sure to be two truly special nights next May.

The Eskies set for Stephen’s Day party in Whelans

After what has been their most successful year to date, The Eskies return to their spiritual home of Whelans on St Stephen’s Day to play a gig that is certain to keep the festive spirit alive and well over the holidays.

Ahead of that much anticipated gig we caught up with the lads after they returned from a self described miniature UK tour to hear about, festivals, touring, stretching their wings, free music and more.

eskies-fb-poster-p

The band has packed a huge amount into the last 12 months, with an appearance on RTE television just one of the many memorable moments, but they are definitely not slowing down as Ian pointed out.

“We’re very excited” said Ian. “We’ve just come back from a little UK tour, we’re working on a load of new stuff and we’ve got Whelans on Stephen’s Day to look forward to.

Tim continues: “Next year is already booking up fast, we’ve plans for an Irish tour, a more extensive UK tour and trips to Italy and France also happening, and that’s all before the Summer so we’re going to be mad busy”.

The move from gigging in Ireland to further afield is something the band felt needed to be done, but that required letting go of the reigns slightly and letting others take charge, which Sean said has worked out pretty well so far.

“Up until very recently we’ve always done everything on our own but we’ve started working with a couple of booking agents in the UK and Europe so that’s opened all kinds of doors as far as travelling and all is concerned.

“As far as a record deal goes, it’s not something we’ve put any great thought into because it hasn’t become any kind of possibility yet but if it did in the future and the deal was right we’d give it a look sure.”

And if that record deal were to come along we at lekmk Promotions were interested to know if the lads from The Eskies would do a U2 and offer their music for free?

“Well that’s something that’s become a bit of an increasing trend” said Ian. “Remember Radiohead did something similar a few years ago with a ‘pay what you want’ type thing.

“Speaking personally though, if there’s a band around that I really love, I want to pay for their music, contribute in some way to their art and that kind of thing.

“I think for people outside the industry it might set a bit of a dangerous precedent for people whereby they might not think that music is worth paying for, not a lot of bands who want to make a career in music can really afford to give it away for free, certainly not independent bands anyway.”

As most who know the band will attest to, they have always taken their music and their sound seriously, and we were interested to know what pearls of wisdom would they have for youngsters planning a similar path over the coming years.

“First things first, write loads of songs, play ALL the gigs and get some decent stuff up online” stated Ian.

Kearney continued: “Play what you want to play not what you think people want you to play, don’t lie!!

“Prepare to be broke, resist the temptation to split your gig money and get locked, always have band money for when recording, videos, design stuff and travelling and don’t be an arsehole to other bands, promoters or sound engineers (even if they’re arseholes to you).”

Sounds like pretty good advice and from a group of lads who are doing things their own way, and to hear their truly recognisable sound this Christmas you are invited to head to Whelans on St Stephen’s Day.

Barry Sutton: “I don’t trust people who don’t love the Beatles”

11872909_1612525949009926_1906210337_nBarry Sutton recently played a couple of intimate gigs in Ireland, including a set in the front window of Whelans, and lekmk Promotions caught up with the former La’s man for a quick chat.

Having had a truly colourful career to date, Sutton said being a part of the La’s was “a whirlwind of frustration and genius”, and “a legacy that endures”, while he acknowledged the benefit of time when reflecting on that period, saying “you don’t realise the impact or connection without the benefit of hindsight”.

Sutton played a mix of old and new songs while in Ireland, and like most singer-songwriters, the Liverpudlian said his sound has changed over the years, while his influences come from a range of places.

“My playing is much cleaner and more nuanced now,” he explained. “I listen to much more diverse music, I sing and I write better, and I have a much better understanding of what I want to achieve.

“I don’t trust people who don’t love the Beatles! I love Debussy, Jinx Lennon, Field Music, but my biggest influence is myself. Without being weird, you are influenced when you are searching for identity. I found one.”

It’s hard not be inspired when listening to Barry Sutton speak or sing. Every few minutes he seems to deliver a line that could be the title of a blockbuster album.

Noting the likes of Stravinsky, Beefheart, and Charlie Parker as his inspirations, the guitarist said he never stops wanting to learn, and described coming to Ireland as ‘heaven’.

He also went as far to praise Ireland’s acoustic scene compared to that of the UK, while his thoughts on the current music scene in general consisted of it being, “reactionary with flashes of genuine creativity here and there”.

For those interested, Sutton’s current playlist features the music of 1950’s bebop pianist, Lennie Tristano, an American jazz pianist, composer and teacher of jazz improvisation.

It’s testament to the avid Liverpool fan’s love for music that he would have such a far-reaching taste, and his advice to those seeking to make it in the music industry was just as inspiring as his powerful use of lyrics and sound; “Create dangerously, push on, make music of the future, not the past” he said.

Former La’s member Barry Sutton set to play Whelans

lekmk Promotions are delighted to announce former La’s member and singer-songwriter Barry Sutton will play an intimate acoustic gig in Whelans on Thursday 6 August at 9pm.

The Liverpudlian guitarist, who will be in Dublin for one night, will play the cosy front window of the renowned music venue, and admission on the night is free.

Having performed with several bands including Cast, The Stairs, and Smaller, Sutton’s set list will feature well known La’s songs and plenty of his own material, which consists of a mix of alternative, psychedelic, and indie rock.

Sutton joined the La’s in August 1988, and featured in the ‘There She Goes’ video before leaving the band in July 1989.

From there he toured with Froth and Kung Fu, while he also had stints with several other groups throughout the 90s and 2000s.

Sutton was in Dublin at the beginning of June with former La’s bandmate, Cammy, performing at Sweeney’s Retro Revival under the name of his current band Beatnik Hurricane.
